NSBE community service

The Savannah State University (SSU) chapter of the National Society of Black Engineers (NSBE) focuses its community service heavily on the third pillar of its mission: "positively impact the community." Their service activities are largely centered around STEM outreach to local Savannah youth and civic engagement within Chatham County.

Here is a summary of their key community service areas:

1. Pre-College Initiative (PCI)

The flagship of NSBE’s service is the Pre-College Initiative (PCI), designed to encourage K–12 students to pursue careers in science and engineering.

  • School Visits: SSU NSBE members frequently visit local Savannah-Chatham County schools (such as DeRenne Middle School and Groves High School) to serve as role models.

  • Mentorship: They provide tutoring and mentorship to help younger students with math and science homework, aiming to bridge the gap in STEM proficiency for minority students before they reach college.

  • Interactive Workshops: The chapter has historically participated in or hosted workshops (sometimes in collaboration with programs like the K.I.D.S. Club) to teach industrial and mechanical engineering concepts through hands-on activities, such as building simple machines or coding basics.

2. Community & Civic Engagement

Beyond the classroom, the chapter engages in general service to improve the physical environment of Savannah.

  • Adopt-A-Street: Like many organizations at SSU, NSBE has participated in the city’s "Adopt-A-Street" or "Adopt-A-Spot" program, committing to cleaning up litter along specific roadways near the campus to maintain community beautification.

  • Local Volunteering: Members have volunteered at major local events such as Mega Genesis, a massive college and career fair held annually in Savannah that targets high school students. NSBE members often man tables or act as guides to help students navigate their future career options.

3. Collaboration with the "STRIPES" Program

SSU has a formal service-learning initiative called STRIPES (SSU Tigers Representing Intellectual Preparedness and Excellence in Service).

  • NSBE members often log their service hours through this university-wide system, ensuring their contributions are documented and aligned with the university’s broader goals of civic responsibility.

  • Through this framework, they collaborate with other campus organizations for larger service days, such as campus clean-ups or food drives for local pantries.

4. Professional Partnership

The collegiate chapter often coordinates with the South Coastal NSBE Professionals chapter (the alumni group in the Savannah area). This partnership allows SSU students to volunteer alongside professional engineers at networking mixers and E-Week (National Engineers Week) events, expanding their impact on the local community.
